US industry groups push for action against EU ETS

A wide range of US organizations—including Airlines for America, the Aerospace Industries Assn., Airports Council International-North America, several airline employee unions and the Chamber of Commerce—have asked the US government to “strongly restate opposition to—and continuing plans for overturning—the application of the EU [Emissions Trading Scheme] ETS to international aviation.”

A coalition of countries opposed to airlines’ inclusion in the EU ETS are meeting this week in Washington DC .

In a letter to US transportation secretary Ray LaHood and secretary of state Hillary Clinton, the organizations stated, “As each day goes by without an EU act to halt or suspend the ETS, the harm to US airlines and aircraft operators and the threat to US sovereignty grow while the US government’s credibility is weakened. We urge the administration to file an action under Article 84 of the Chicago Convention and to take all other action necessary to overturn this wrongful scheme.”
