Countries opposed to Europe airline carbon tax meet

A group of 16 countries, who are opposed to the European Union’s plan to tax airlines for carbon emissions, meet in Washington this week, to draw up an alternative scheme.

The EU’s tax on emissions was introduced in January, but airlines will only start receiving bills in 2013, after this year’s carbon emissions have been assessed.

Many countries, including China, India, Russia and the United States, have opposed the European plan, claiming it violates international law.

Raymond Benjamin, secretary general, of the International Civil Aviation Organisation, told the BBC’s Sharanjit Leyl, divisions over the tax could lead to a trade war.
